Abstract

A thin flat workpiece has a hardened edge and a tough back with the zone of separation between them forming a lengthwise undulating, crenellated or zig-zag pattern. The pattern may be produced by feeding the workpiece, e.g. a saw-blade, through a heating medium and giving it periodically a movement transversely to the line of feed. The heating may be by flame or induction heating and in the latter case the pattern may be produced by suitably shaping the inductors.
