Abstract

645,014. Shuttlecocks. MILLER, J. W. Aug. 27, 1947, No. 23622. [Class 132 (iii)] A shuttlecock comprising a cork head and feathers has a crown applied to the cork head to support the feathers and carry weighting means constructed integrally with it. As shown in Figs. 3 and 6 the cork head 10 is covered with kid or the like attached by cement. The crown is moulded from plastic such as cellulose acetate butyrate, is integral with a weighting device, and comprises a disc 15, with apertures 18 for feathers 13, and a flange 16. The apertures may be formed by individual bosses to reduce weight. Preferably the feathers do not penetrate the cork head. The weighting device may be solid and be trimmed to standard weight by drilling a hole 22 or maybe, as shown in Fig. 8, a container 23 in which pellets 25 are placed to bring it to standard weight and sealed in by a suitable solution. The flange 16 may have an internal bead 27 to make the crown more secure. Assembly of the unit consists of the steps of mounting the feathers on the crown, stitching, lacquering and weighting and then securing to the head. The crown may be attached by adhesive or the head compressed by a collett to insert it within the flange.
