[Classes 79 (i), 79 (ii), 79 (iii) and 79(v)] [Also in Groups I and XXIX] In power-driven agricultural or other apparatus of the kind adapted to be controlled by an operator walking with the apparatus, wherein rotation of a driving wheel or like driving member 13, is effected by a hydraulic motor 26 under the influence of a slidable operating-member 52, the latter is adapted, upon movement, to operate a hydraulic valve 34 connecting the motor 26 to a pump 27, and so control the action of the motor to cause the driving member 13 to rotate. The cutting cylinder 10 and differentially-coupled driving members or rollers 13 of a lawn mower are driven through a differential gear and a chain drive from the sliding-vane type motor 26. The pump 27 is coupled to an internal-combustion engine 31, draws from a sump 32 and supplies liquid to the valve 34 through a relief valve 37 which leads back to the sump 32. The position of the valve 34 not only controls the forward or reverse direction of the mower but also its rate of movement. The valve 34 is operated through a lever 42, rod 43 and a cross-shaft 46 attached to each of the two handles of the machine. Each handle comprises the member 52 which is axially slidable, against its spring, in either direction from a neutral or stop position to move the shaft 46 and hence operate valve 24. When the members 52 are released they will be automatically returned to the neutral position and the machine will stop. In order that the mower may be readily moved by hand when the engine is inoperative the sprockets of the chain drive may rotate freely on their shafts after spring-loaded driving-pins have been manually released. The hand grips may be rotated as well as moved axially to provide for the differential control of a pair of hydraulic motors by an auxiliary valve.
