Abstract

644,651. Tubular heat-exchangers. PARSONS & CO., Ltd., and HOPPER, C. March 19; 1948, No. 8212. [Class 64(iii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a tubular heat-exchanger of the kind comprising a plurality of tubes attached at their ends to tube plates and disposed in rows in a closely packed group and on a triangular pitch slightly greater than the outside diameter of the individual tubes, every third tube b in each row being encompassed by a wire helix c of suitable diameter of wire whereby a series of axially spaced abutment points are provided for the remaining tubes d, and whereby the encompassed tubes b are uniformly spaced throughout the group, a method of construction according to which after the tubes d which are not to be encompassed have been fitted to suitably perforated tube plates, wire helices c are threaded through the remaining holes 'in the tube plates and the remaining tubes b are inserted with a slight turning movement to enter and pass into the helices. The forward ends of the tubes b may be fitted with a tapered plug to aid the insertion of those tubes. The tubes are thereafter welded to the tube plates. Specification 607,717 is referred to.
