Abstract

644,646. Locks. HOUDAILLE-HERSHEY CORPORATION. March 5, 1948, No. 6895. Convention date, April 25, 1947. [Class 44] Door latch mechanism, particularly for vehicle doors, comprises a keeper, a movably mounted bolt arranged to engage the keeper, and means for holding the bolt in any of a number of door holding positions, the said means including a manually controllable release member operatively disconnected from the remainder of the retaining means when the bolt is disengaged from the keeper, the release member being operable to release the retaining means when the bolt and keeper are engaged to latch the door. In the form shown, a two-armed rotary bolt A is mounted on a pin 12 in a housing 16 secured to plate 10 of the casing, and co-operates with a keeper 30, Fig. 3, having a channel the upper wall of which has a downward projection. The take-up mechanism for holding the door in a number of latched positions includes an arm 19, Figs. 1 and 2, pivoted at 20, and a take-up arm 22 pivoted at its lower end on a pin 23 on the latching arm 14 of the bolt A, and biassed by a spring 26 which tends to rotate it counter-clockwise as seen in Fig. 1. In the unlatched position, Fig. 1, a projection 28 on the take-up arm 22 engages a collar 29 on an inward extension of the pin 12 and prevents further rotation, but as the bolt A is rotated on entering the keeper, the arm 22 is lifted so that it is further rotated by the spring 26. A lug 33 at the upper end of the take up arm then slides up surfaces 32 of the arm 19 and finally engages serrations 34, holding the bolt against unlatching. The outside release mechanism includes a sliding plate 36 guided by stamped up parts 40, 41, of the plate 11, and by pin and slot engagement with the pin 20, spring biassed to the position of Fig. 1, and actuated by a push-button, or by a handle, engaging a flange 37. In normal position, a flange 39 on the plate 36 supports the nose 48 at the inner end of the arm 19, but on the plate being pressed inwardly, the nose 48 is released, and arm 19 drops, releasing the bolt for free rotation. Arm 19 is afterwards lifted by contact of a pin 49 on arm 22 with the curved under side of arm 19. Release from inside is effected by a release plate 53, Fig. 7, pivoted at 51 on plate 11 and actuated by a link 56 from a handle. The plate 53 has a lug 62 which makes contact with a flange 60, Fig. 1, on the sliding plate 36 and moves the latter on operation of the inside handle. Locking against operation from outside is effected by a locking plate 63, Fig. 6, which can be controlled by the spindle 68 of a key lock, and also by a push rod 69, a flange 66 on plate 63 being positioned to obstruct movement of the release plate 36, Fig. 1. The inside release plate 53 is arranged to move the locking plate 63 to unlocking position on operation to unlock.
