Abstract

737,075. Latches. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Dec. 11, 1953 [Dec. 11, 1952], No. 34600/53. Class 44. A latch mechanism for a vehicle door has a rotatable bolt 16, Fig. 1, connected by an integral shank 17 to a ratchet 18 arranged to rotate on a flange 12 of an L-shaped mounting plate 11. The bolt 16 is adapted to engage a conventional keeper mounted on the jamb face of the adjacent door pillar (not shown) and rotation of the bolt corresponding to opening the door is controlled by the spring pressed pawl 23 engaging the ratchet 18 which is automatically disengaged to allow rotation of the bolt when closing the door. For a front door latch mechanism Figs. 1, 4 and 5, the invention resides in unlatching or locking the bolt by means of the plunger 41 which is slidably carried in a bush 42 rotatably mounted on a flange 43 of the mounting plate 11. Plunger 41 is pushed through bush 42 by push button 49 to deflect lever 22 clockwise by bearing on flange 39 which by means of the pin and slot connection 36, 37, withdraws the pawl from the ratchet and unlatches the bolt. To lock the mechanism the shoulder 63 of control lever 51 prevents clockwise rotation of lever 22. Control lever 51 can be set in position by rotation of the plunger 41 by the associated lock cylinder 48 which rotates the lever 47, Fig. 5. which is integral with the bush 42 and straddles the narrow end 62 of the control lever 51 which is slidably positioned in a lateral slot in flange 39 of lever 22. The latch may also be locked by remote operation of the control lever by arm 54 from the inside of the vehicle and arm 66, Fig. 4, can be similarly operated to engage arm 27 of the pawl 23 to unlatch the bolt unless arm 56 of the control lever when this is in the locked condition bars the movement of arm 26 of pawl 23. In a latch mechanism for a rear door, Figs. 6 and 7, the control lever 71 is operated by the lever 77, arm 81 of which straddles end portion 73, and is set remotely from inside the vehicle. When lever 77 is set to the position which locks the lever 22 an upturned lug 84 on lever 81, by engaging arm 83 of the lever 82, prevents the latter from unlatching the bolt, by operating the pawl 76, when operated remotely from inside the vehicle.
