Abstract
Non-volatile organo-silicic oils are made by reacting sulphuric acid of concentration 50 to 85 per cent with methylhalogenosilanes having a mean CH3/Si ratio of 2 to 2.6, separating the oil and freeing it from volatile constituents. Crude dimethyldichlorosilane may be used, or mixtures having the appropriate CH3/Si ratio. In contrast to the result when using sulphuric acid of more than 85 per cent concentration, as in Specification 622,129, the reacted mixture separates into two layers, an upper one containing hexamethyldisiloxane and a high proportion of a viscous oil and a lower acid layer, which when 75 to 85 per cent acid is used may retain some siloxanes which may be separated by dilution or extraction. Sulphuric acid of at least 60 per cent is preferably used to minimise solution therein of the hydrochloric acid which is evolved in gaseous form. In examples: (1) methylchlorsilane (48.2 per cent chlorine; CH3/Si, 2.34) is reacted with 73 per cent sulphuric acid, the oily layer, after mixing with ligroin, being decanted, washed in water and dilute ammonia, the ligroin evaporated and then distilled under reduced pressure to give volatile products and an oil; (2) and (3) methylchlorsilane is reacted with 72 and 69 per cent sulphuric acid.ALSO:Non-volatile organo-silicic oils are made by reacting sulphuric acid of concentration 50 to 85 per cent with methylhalogenosilanes having a mean CH3/Si ratio of 2 to 2.6, separating the oil and freeing it from volatile constituents.
