Abstract

Hydrocarbon mixtures containing xylene isomerides with styrene, or with saturated hydrocarbons having boiling points substantially within 10 DEG C. of that of styrene, or with both styrene and such hydrocarbons, are separated by adding ethylene-glycol-monomethyl-ether as an azeotrope former, and subjecting the mixture to fractional distillation. The azeotrope-former may be washed out of the individual fractions with water, and substantially pure xylenes, styrene, and saturated hydrocarbons obtained. The distillation may be carried out at barometric pressure or, advantageously, at reduced pressures. In an example, commercial 2 DEG xylole was mixed with an equal weight of ethylene-glycolmonomethyl-ether and fractionally distilled in a 30-plate column at barometric pressure. The first distillates, boiling below 118 DEG C., contained between 40 and 50 per cent. of hydrocarbons which were recovered by washing out the ether with water and, after drying, had specific gravity 0.76 to 0.80. The fractions distilling between 118.5 DEG and 119 DEG C. contained the azeotropes formed from the xylenes. In another example, crude light solvent naphtha was washed with caustic soda solution, dilute sulphuric acid, and water, and was then fractionated batchwise in a 40-plate column, the pressure being reduced in stages so that the distillation was carried out without the charge being heated above 80 DEG C. The 72 DEG -75 DEG /73.5 m.m. fraction was found to contain over 50 per cent. styrene; it was admixed with two-and-a-half pints of ethylene-glycol-monomethyl-ether and fractionally distilled in the same column at 73 m.m. The styrene/ether azeotrope was collected between 59.4 DEG and 60.4 DEG ; it contained 3.6 per cent. of styrene which was recovered by water washing. Examples are also given in which the azeotrope-former was added in only sufficient quantity to bring over one constituent or constituent group. Specification 536,172 is referred to.
