Abstract
644,352. Milling-machines. OSIPENKO, M., (trading as RUSSELL, H.). Aug. 7, 1946, No. 23466. [Class 83 (iii)] A method of manufacturing plastic spectacle frames comprises the steps of clamping together a blank, a templet having a guiding edge, and spacing means between the blank and templet, moving them so that an edge of the blank is fed progressively edgewise up to a rotary cutter, and controlling the edgewise movement of the blank by engaging the guiding edge of the templet with an abutment which has an arcuate guiding surface with an axis of curvature coaxial with the axis of the cutter, so that the blank is cut to the shape of a spectacle frame or component thereof. In one form, Fig. 5, the blank 3 is clamped in a jig between a templet 13, 19 having lens openings 21, 23, and a supporting plate 15 having clearance openings 33, 35, the jig which also comprises a clamping plate 17 being moved so as to engage the edges of the lens openings 21, 23 with a stationary or rotary annulus 25, lens openings being cut out of the blank by means of a rotary cutter 29. The blank is clamped in the jig by means of pins 56 which are urged endwise into engagement with the blank by flat springs 53. Spring fingers are provided to engage the edge of the blank and clamp it edgewise against a stop. The plate 15 is provided with pins 59 for supporting the jig on a work-table. The blank is heated initially and subjected to pressure to form a protuberance 5, part of which subsequently forms the nosepiece, and two holes are punched in the blank within the boundaries of the parts thereof which are to be cut away to form the lens openings, the cutter being inserted into the holes in turn to cut the lens openings to shape. The plate 17 may be used as a templet instead of the plate 13, 19. The edges of the lens openings are grooved and bevelled by means of three axially-aligned cutters, Fig. 13 (not shown), which are substituted for the cutter 29. Other jigs are provided for cutting the blank to the external contour of the spectacle frame, for shaping the sides, for bevelling and facing the outer face of each side, and for shaping the nosepads. Specifications 234,249, [Class 83 (iii)], and 644,353 are referred to.
