Abstract

644,171 Pipes &c. couplings. BRODEN, E. W. March 24, 1948, No. 8629. [Class 99(i)] In a quick-connecting pipe &c. coupling comprising a socket 4, Fig. 1, having holes 29 for balls 9, which are radially displaceable to engage a recess 30 in a spigot 14 by a latching sleeve 10 slidable on the socket, the centre lines of the holes form acute angles with the centre line of the socket so that the portion of each hole located closest to the sleeve will be farthest away from the spigot-receiving end of the socket. A spring 11 retains the sleeve 10 in the locking position. In a modification, Fig. 2, the member 14 is in the form of a socket and has a recess 30 for the balls 9. The balls are displaced by a plunger 10 slidable in the part 4 and actuated by a lever 7. A ball catch in the member 10 prevents inadvertent unlocking. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the part 4 is enclosed in a case 21 which contains a solenoid 22 between which and the latch 10 is located a discshaped armature 23. Balls 9 are inserted between grooves in the armature and the pole faces of the solenoid and the armature is coupled to the latching body so that when the solenoid is energized the armature rotates and actuates the latch. In a third modification, Fig. 6, (not shown), the part of the sleeve 10 overlying the holes 29 in the locking position is tapered whereby the sleeve 10 will be forced to disconnect the coupling when forces tending to pull the parts 4, 14 apart exceed a certain value.
