[Class 44] A lock comprises two locking members which engage, for instance, the two limbs of a shackle, two toothed pinions which are turned simultaneously through equal angles by the insertion of a rack-like key which engages both pinions tangentially, and means connecting the pinions to the locking members so that rotary movement of the former causes sliding movement of the latter. Preferably the axles of the pinions are so interlocked that neither pinion can be moved alone. In the padlock shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a sliding shackle 2 has indentations 4 which are engaged in the locked position by corresponding teeth on bars 5, 6 attached to plates 8, 7 which can slide laterally of the shackle. Each plate has two cut-out parts to accommodate cams 13, 15 and 14, 16, mounted in pairs on shafts 17, 19 respectively. Also mounted on the shafts. but not in the same plane, are pinions 31, 32, preferably formed with teeth of irregular pitch. The key, Fig. 4, has two rows of perforations, 35, 36, which correspond to the teeth of the respective pinions. Since one cam on each shaft engages each plate, both pinions must be turned at once to operate the lock. The pinion shafts are spring biassed to locking position. In the form shown in Figs. 9 and 10, a U-shaped shackle 55 has notches 57, 57<1> in the legs, in which engage, in the locked position, the edges of discs 63, 63<1> respectively which are keyed to two parallel shafts which also carry pinions 58, 60 adapted to be turned simultaneously by a key 62 to bring cut-out parts of the periphery of each disc into line with the shackle legs. In order to prevent one shaft being turned by itself, each shaft has right- and left-hand threads at opposite ends which work in corresponding nuts 64, 65, secured in displaceable plates 64<1>, ,65<1>, mounted in the casing.
