Abstract

643,886. Refrigerating. RUHEMANN, M., and PETROCARBON, Ltd. Oct. 20, 1947, No. 28028. [Class 29] In a compression refrigerating process operating with a mixture of refrigerants of different boiling points, condensation is effected in at least two steps, the liquid and gaseous portions resulting from the first step being physically separated, the gaseous portion, or part thereof when there are more than two condensation steps, being condensed in the next step by evaporation of the liquid portion. Refrigerant is compressed by compressor 13, cooled in a watercooled coil 14, partially condensed in a water-cooled coil 18 and cooled in a chamber 23 by cold gas coming from the evaporators. The droplets formed are agglomerated by a member 28 and the liquid is further cooled in a coil 29 cooled by cold gas coming from the evaporators, the condensate flowing in part through a valve 36 to evaporate in chamber 40 and in part through valve 35 to evaporate in chamber 37. The gaseous portion is condensed in the chamber 40 and flows through valve 42 to evaporate in chamber 43. Cold gas from the evaporator chambers 37, 40, 43 flows through chambers 30 and 23 to the compressor suction. The cooling of the load is effected by the evaporators 37 and 43 but if all the liquid portion is needed to condense the gaseous portion in chamber 40, the evaporator 37 is omitted. Ethylene and propane in equi-molecular proportions may constitute the refrigerant. If the first condensation step is effected by the evaporator of another refrigerating system, the refrigerant mixture may be ethylene and methane. An additional evaporator operating at a still lower temperature may be used if three refrigerants are used, e.g. propane, ethylene and methane. The evaporators 37, 43 may be used to separate gaseous mixtures by condensation. On starting up, the compressor draws refrigerant from a reservoir 11. The coils in the vessels 37, 40, 43 may be formed round hollow cores up which the evaporated vapours pass. According to the Provisional Specification the following mixtures of refrigerant may be used: propane and ethane; ammonia and nitrous oxide; ethane and methane; a mixture of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.
