Abstract
Vinyl halides are prepared by passing acetylene and hydrogen halide in the gaseous phase over a catalyst of a mercury salt on a porous carrier and in the presence of a synthetic polymeric substance the polymeric substance being merely adsorbed by the same carrier as the mercury salt or used instead of another porous carrier as the support for the porous salt. In an example, an equimolar mixture of acetylene and hydrogen chloride is passed at 30 litres per hour over pumice stone which has been impregnated with polymethacrylamide and mercuric chloride-reaction temperature is 150 DEG C. Other polymeric materials mentioned are salts of polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, polycaprolactam, polyadipamide, and hexamethylene diamine and polyamine resins. The mercury containing catalysts may contain other metal salts. Active carbon and silica gel are further examples of porous carriers.ALSO:A catalyst for the preparation of vinyl halides comprises a supported mercury salt and a synthetic polymeric substance, the latter being adsorbed by the support or itself forming the support. Specified polymeric substances include salts of polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, polymethacrylamide, polycaprolactam polyamide from adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine and polyamine resins. Other metallic salts may be present additionally to the mercury salts, e.g. cupric chloride.
