Abstract

643,590. Indicating-apparatus. HILGER & WATTS, Ltd., GODFREY, C. J., and BATY, J. A. Feb. 4, 1948, No. 3241. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Groups XX and XXII] To allow differential thermal expansion longitudinally of a scale and its frame, the scale is divided into several portions each attached to the frame by a key at one point on each of its longitudinal edges transversely opposite the other so as to provide a space between each portion. As shown in Fig. 1, the portions a of glass are held in a steel frame b by keys d of cement or metal, the portions being otherwise free in the frame. The scale may consist of transparent markings on an opaque ground, and for reading, an image of the scale h, Fig. 4, is projected on to a screen j against which is a vernier k consisting of a transparent plate having indentations o forming the vernier scale and illuminated by a lamp m so that the vernier markings appear as bright lines adjacent the projected image. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7 the edgeilluminated scale q has divisions each onetenth of the size of the image of a division of the scale h projected on the screen, measurement being effected by moving the scale until one graduation coincides with the projected image s of one of the scale division of the scale h, the amount of movement being indicated on an additional scale shown below. Both main and vernier scales may be projected on to a screen or may be viewed directly, and the main scale may be edge-illuminated.
