Abstract

643,588. Endless chain conveyers; shoots and hoppers; unloading vehicles. BOOKEY, J. T. B., and SMITH, W. A. Jan. 16, 1948, Nos. 1417 and 12244. [Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XVIII] A vehicle has provision for weighing a bag while it is suspended beneath a controlled outlet of a hopper supported by the vehicle, said outlet being closed either manually or automatically when a predetermined weight of material has been transferred to the bag. Sacks 16, Fig. 1, are suspended by diametrically opposed handles 20, securedthereto, from the arms 25 of a spring balance 28, under the discharge shoot 15 of a hopper 10 which is pivotable about pivots 12 to facilitate discharge. When a predetermined weight of material has been discharged into the sack a cut-off gate is closed, either manually or automatically, and the final weight of material is adjusted by manually scooping material from auxiliary containers through doors 19. These containers 18 are formed by the corners of the hopper 10 and plates 17, Fig. 3, which plates also serve to direct material into the shoot 15. Endless chains 23 carry hooks 22 which, on actuation of the chains engage under rods 21 on the handles 20 and lift the bag off the arms 25 and raise it to a convenient height for removal on an operator's back. These chains are driven by sprockets 39 on a shaft 40 which is driven either manually or by a fluid motor (not shown). The' weighing apparatus is set in a gymbal mounting pivoted at 31 and 33 and is counterbalanced by weights 30 so that for all vehicle positions the apparatus remains vertical, and in order that the hopper, when tilted, will not foul the balance mechanism an accommodating recess 45 is formed therein. In a modification, Fig. 4, the load is suspended from links 59 pivotally mounted on a yoke 60 which is pivoted to the main frame at 61 and the spring balance is pivotally mounted on the hopper; thus the weighing mechanism remains vertical for all vehicle positions as before. In another modification (Fig. 8, not shown) the bag is held in the filling position by hand, and the bottom of the bag is supported on a weigh pan from which it is lifted as before by the endless chains 23. The hopper may' be discharged into the shoot by means of an endless belt conveyer 90, Fig. 6, which constitutes the hopper floor, or the hopper may contain a movable push plate (not shown). In all the above modifications a counting device is incorporated to indicate the number of weighings carried out.
