[Class 64(i)] For charging a fibrous material, such as wood chips, into the liquid-filled space of a digester 1 under pressure, the feeding end of the digester is provided with a feeding screw 7 surrounded by a sieve 6 in a sieve housing 33, and an intermittent charging device, comprising a cylinder 5 or other body rotating or otherwise moving in a housing so as to put a compartment in the cylinder or other body into communication with an inlet and a discharge opening in the housing, is connected by at least two conduits 31, 34, one of which includes a pump 8, with opposite sides of the sieve 6 to form a circulation system, so that circulation of liquid may be maintained by the pump 8 from the charging device to the space occupied by the feeding screw 7 within the sieve 6 and through the sieve into the sieve housing 33 and from the latter back into the charging device. The fibrous material is fed by a conveyer screw into the cells of the cylinder 5 when they are at the position 11. When the cells reach the position 13 the fibrous material is entrained by liquid from the pump 8 and passes with the liquid along the pipe 31. Liquid leaking from the cell at 13 passes to cells at 12, 14, and from the latter is withdrawn by a pump 15 and returned, mixed with fresh make-up liquid from the pipe 28a, to the cell at 13. The make-up liquid and the liquid drained from the cell at 14 may pass into tank 16.
