Abstract
642,914. Embossing- machines. ADDRESSOGRAPH - MULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. July 11, 1947, No. 18495. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1946. [Class 100 (iv)] A selective stop mechanism for the die heads of an embossing machine includes a rotatable die head shaft 10 constantly driven in a predetermined direction, a mounting member 12 surrounding the shaft adjacent to a radial stop arm 15A fixed on the shaft, an annular series of stops S movably mounted on the member 12 for selective setting movement from normal inactive positions to set positions wherein an actuated or set stop, as S<SP>1</SP>, lies in the path of the stop arm so as to be effective to stop the rotation of the shaft, and means operable throughout a predetermined range equal to the spacing of a number of stops and extending in a leading direction from the stop arm to prevent the setting of any one of the stop disposed within the range, the means being disposed between the stop arm and the mounting member. A set stop is first engaged by the front surface 58 of a shroud member 50 rotatably mounted on the shaft and urged in a leading direction by a spring 56, its position relative to the stop arm being limited by a pin 53 on the latter riding in a slot 52 in the shroud member. If the front of the shroud member comes against a partially set stop, a bevelled part 58C of the surface 58 cams the stop back into operative position, whereas if the top of the stop is higher than the top of the bevelled surface, its setting is completed. The set stop forces back the shroud plate relative to the stop arm, until the pin 53 reaches the left-hand end of the slot 52, as viewed from below in Fig. 2, when the surface 58 is behind the stop-abutting portion of a latch pawl 20 on the stop arm. The stop is next engaged by the end 30A of a control latch 30 pivoted on the under side of the stop arm 15A and urged by a spring 32 in a leading direction with a tooth 30T projecting into a hollow portion of the shaft 10 to prevent the upward movement of a plunger mounted on a control rod 36. The stop contacts a cam surface 25 of the latch pawl 20 pivoted at 21 on the arm 15A and forces the pawl outwards, until a spring 26 causes the pawl to snap back behind the stop, a tooth 24 preventing reverse movement of the stop. The stop meanwhile has forced back the latch 30 to withdraw the tooth 307 and release the plunger for an upward movement which initiates a cycle of operation of the embossing means of the machine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a reference to the U.S.A. Specification 1,831,103. This reference does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
