Abstract
1,188,920. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 12 Nov., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 53516/68. Heading B6F. A selective printer comprises a platen 18, a type carrier 12 including a plurality of type elements (17), Fig. 2, not shown, for printing on a document 16, the type carrier 12 being movable about a pivot 15 between an open position for insertion of a document and a closed position for printing, and locking means locking the type carrier in the closed position and simultaneously moving the platen 18 towards the type carrier 12. The locking means comprises a handle 42 formed with a hook 48 for engagement with a pin 50 of a latch member 51, the handle 42 being pivotable on a shaft 38 and being connected by a spring 44 to a selector 40 fixed to the shaft 38. Upward locking movement of the handle 42 causes rotation of the shaft 38 through the spring 44, an eccentric 36 thereby being rotated to urge the plates 18 against springs 30 towards the type carrier 12. When a sensing member 68 strikes the document 16, a latch lever 64 carrying the sensing member is rotated to allow a latch lever 60 to pivot under the bias of a spring 62 and bring a pawl 50 into locking engagement with teeth 43 on the selector 40. The position of the platen 18 is thereby controlled by the thickness of the document 16. Lowering of the handle 42 to the latch releasing position shown brings a pin 46 into contact with the cam 40 to rotate the eccentric 36 to a position wherein the platen is at its furthest point from the type carrier 12.
