Abstract

642,713. Mechanical toys. JEPSON, B. Nov. 1, 1946, No. 32561. [Class 132 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A mechanical doll includes articulated members which are caused to perform predetermined movements by the provision at a point of articulation of any of the respective members of a crank in an operating rod projecting externally and connected for rotation within the doll while the latter is held relatively stationary at the member through which the operating rod emerges, the rod being free to rotate along its whole length within the figure. Articulation may mean either actual jointing, the provision of flexible corrugations in non-flexible material or the inherent flexibility of a flexible shell surrounding the doll. As shown the doll consists of a hollow flexible shell 1, one leg 2 being relatively stiff and formed with a base 3 by which it may be held. The operating rod 8 is cranked as at 8a, 8b, 8c ... each crank carrying an internal bracing section 4, 5, 6 and 7 which prevents rotation with the rod but allows the body to tilt and gyrate about the rod axis. The cranks may be in any suitable direction or at any suitable angle. The free leg may be braced with a rod 12 and the fixed leg connected from hip to knee with a similar rod 13. If desired links may connect the waist and hip sections. The operating rod is formed with a crank handle 16 for rotation. In a modification, Fig. 2, the cranked operating rod 17 is carried in a flexible cardboard figure 18 having corrugations 19, 20, 21 at hip, waist and neck, at which points the rod is cranked. The leg 22 is suitably stiffened. Such a toy may be made in synthetic resin material. The principle may be applied to a figure designed to walk about a fixed axis, this form being provided with a multiplicity of secondary operating rods geared together and to the main operating rod. The movement of the toy may be controlled by a power unit. Flexible transmission strings or wires associated with a cam or cams may be used within the figure in addition to the cranked rods.
