642,492. Indicating liquid levels. SOC. ANON. DES ETABLISSEMENTS J. COCARD. July 5, 1948, No. 17996. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1947. [Class 123(i)] An illuminated water level indicator comprises a water column between sheets of a transparent material 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, e.g. of mica, which bear respectively against two plates 4, 4<SP>1</SP> each having perforations 28, 28<SP>1</SP>, inclined to each other. Rays of light from a source 7 behind the plate 4<SP>1</SP> pass through perforations 28<SP>1</SP>, those above the water level 29 being intercepted by the plate 4, as are those well below the level 29. Those in the region of the interface 29 are however subject to total internal reflection there, and hence emerge by the perforations 28, which causes an observer in front of the plate 4 to see the level 29 as an illuminated strip between darker zones. In a modification, the perforations 28' are horizontal, light falling on the interface 29 at grazing incidence being refracted through the perforations 28.
