Abstract

642,160. Extruding rubber pellets. FARRELBIRMINGHAM CO., Inc. Oct. 24, 1947, No. 28460. Convention date, June 29, 1945. [Class 87 (ii)] Uncured rubber is fed from a hopper and extruded through perforations in a cylindrical shell 19 by means of a screw 14. The extruded rubber is cut into pellets by knives 63, Fig. 6, mounted on angle irons 37 fixed between rings 38, 41. The ring 41 is rotated by a motor 22. Screws 69, 73 allow the knives to be swung inwardly or outwardly about a rod 66. A small clearance exists between the knives and the shell 19. The cutting apparatus is contained in a casing 20, into which powder, e.g. talc, is blown through nozzles 59 and windows 61 in the ring 38, to powder the rubber pellets. The pellets fall out through an opening 76 and may be removed on a conveyer. The powder-laden air is exhausted through screens 83, 84 to be reintroduced into the casing. The casing of the extrusion chamber may be cooled. Extra perforations are provided for rubber escaping between the shell 19 and a ring 32. U.S.A.
