Abstract

641,894. Application of indicators. CABLE, R. G. April 24, 1947, No. 10974. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group X] A hydraulically - operated pit-prop is provided with a bleeder valve, Fig. 5, at the top of the cylinder to allow liquid to escape when the load on the prop exceeds a predetermined value, thus causing the length of the prop to be adjusted in proportion to the load. The prop comprises a piston 4 fixed to a foot 5, and a cylinder 2 fixed to a head 3 on which is pivotally mounted a short joist 39. The cylinder has a spring-urged, non-return inlet valve 16. The bleeder valve has a spring (31)- urged valve member 28. The pressure at which the bleeder valve opens is adjusted by means of a screw-threaded plug 26. The liquid escapes through holes 33. The escaping liquid, which may be coloured, indicates that a " squeeze " is occurring. The upward movement of the prop may be limited by steps 8 on the piston and cylinder. The foot 5 may be pivotally mounted and the bearing surfaces of the foot and head may be serrated. The prop may be made of an aluminium alloy, in which case the bearing surfaces of the piston and cylinder may have a hard chrome coating.
