Abstract
641,556. Electrolytic cells. KREBS & CO., AKT.-GES. May 24, 1947, No. 13990. Convention date, May 27, 1946. [Class 41] In an electrolyser, e.g. for producing oxygen compounds of chlorine, comprising a plurality of cells 2 interconnected successively for flow as by interconnecting pipes 5, and separated from one another by parallel impervious partition walls 3, in each of which are mounted bipolar electrodes 4 of graphite, the pores of which are filled by suitable water-repellent material, the said electrodes have an intermediate portion 19, Fig. 5, embedded in the wall 3 over a length of the electrode perpendicular to the wall of at least 7 cms. The electrodes may be in one piece with opposite ends projecting into adjacent cells, or they each may comprise two interchangeable portions which contact each other laterally in the wall 3 over the 7 cm. portion embedded in the wall, the interconnecting surfaces of the electrodes being formed with corresponding mating faces, e.g. smooth planed or corrugated held together by lateral pressure exerted by a gauge block 18 of electrode material or of electrically insulating liquid-proof material such as ebonite, polyvinyl chloride or dense ceramic masses located between two electrodes. The contact faces between two electrode portions are rendered liquid-tight by sealing means. Each cell is provided with a detachable lid 14 sealed hydraulically at 15 and with a gas discharge aperture 16, and with supports 6 for the electrodes 4. Top portion 17 of partition 3 is removed when replacing the graphite plates 4. The electrolyser 1 may be built of concrete, masonry, or sheet iron and lined on the inside with stoneware plates jointed by a non- conducting and acid-proof mastic.
