Abstract
371,837. Electrolytic cells. BILLITER, J., 12, Reithlegasse, Vienna. Jan. 24, 1931, No. 2442. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1930. [Class 41.] A cell for the purification o f liquids is built up of frames R each of which is provided with a pair of diaphragms D tightly inserted therein to enclose an electrode space and is formed with a recess co-operating with the adjacent frame to form a space H for the passage of the liquid to be purified. A flow of liquid into the electrode spaces for flushing is promoted by maintaining the hydrostatic pressure therein below that in the intervening spaces. The electrode spaces may be kept empty of liquids, if desired, by suitable choice of the diaphragm material and the operating conditions. The electrodes E may be of graphite or magnetite in plates or in granulated form. The spaces H are connected by passages p at the bottom and passages q at the top of the frames. The frames R are cast from a readily fusible insulating material such as bitumen with mineral fillers, asphalt cement or kerasolith, and may be recast when worn out. Jointing of the frames may be effected by surface fusion and compression. The electrodes are preferably connected in bipolar relation, 10-36 of them being connected across a voltage of 220. The diaphragms may be of filter cloth asbestos, porous vulcanite, asphalt or ceramic materials. When flexible materials are used the electrode material, if granular, should be placed between perforated plates or in perforated baskets protected by asphalt. The electrode chambers may be open but should be provided with tight lids when treating liquids containing chlorine.
