Abstract

352,109. Electrolysis. BILLITER, J., 12, Reithlegasse, Vienna. April 11, 1930, No. 11563. Convention date, April 12. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41.] In the purification of water or other liquids by electrolytic removal of dissolved salts, electroosmotic flow through the diaphragms is prevented as far as possible by the use of a mean potential difference of less than 20 volts, preferably 6-18 volts, per liquid compartment. Permeable diaphragms of low membrane potential are employed, and charging of these by the current is neutralized by maintaining a higher hydrostatic pressure in the centre chamber than in the electrode chambers, thus producing a flow of liquid towards the electrodes. The liquid may be passed in parallel streams through a number of cells electrically connected in series. Bipolar electrodes may be employed. Specifications 14195/03, 11823/14 and 211,562, [all in Class 41, Electrolysis], are referred to.
