Abstract
139,296. Hepburn, G. G. Feb. 22, 1919. Cells; diaphragms; alkalis and chlorine, obtaining.-In a mono-polar electrolyzer of the press type, a number of units each consisting of anodes, cathodes, frames, and diaphragms are arranged in a series with insulation between adjacent units, and with independent liquid connexions for the units. As shown, each unit comprises an anode a, cathode b, diaphragm c, and frames d, e. Between the units are insulating-plates u. The electrodes may be plain plates, or may have grooves receiving a resistant non-conductor such .as cement, or may have collars of such a material, which forms a bearing-surface for rubber or other packing g. Carbon anodes and iron cathodes are suitable. The top bar of each frame is of inverted-trough shape to form a gas chamber. The frames d, e may be of conducting or non-conducting material, coated with a protective material; those for the anode chambers may be of fused lead chloride. Through the frames extend liquid supply and draw-off pipes i, j, gas-pipes k, and cooling-pipes h. The cooling-water may be supplied in drops to prevent conduction therethrough. Diaphragms of sheet asbestos, rendered impermeable at the periphery, may be used; or loose granular or fibrous material, such as asbestos, quartz, or sand, may be enclosed between two perforated, slotted, or gauze sheets, optionally coated to resist alkali and chlorine. A combination of loose material and asbestos sheet may also be used. The electrodes and other parts may rest on bars directly or by means of lugs. A unit may comprise two anodes and one cathode, or vice versa.
