Abstract

208,649. Ashcroft, E. A. Jan. 11, 1923. Addition to 198,024. Electrolytic furnaces.-A number of multiplecouple electrolyzers according to the parent Specification are grouped together in one tank to form a compound electrolyzer. Fig. 1 shows twelve multiple-couple electrolyzers or piles, insulated from one another and the tank A by silica plates a and silica beads a<2>, the top electrode of one pile being connected to the bottom electrode of the next by carbon or graphite bridge pieces B<3>. The tank is provided with an inlet F for the electrolyte and outlets A<3>, H for the gas and metal respectively. The tank may be heat-insulated and gas heated as set forth in the parent Specification. The electrodes B, Fig. 3, are insulated from one another by silica rods b, and may be corrugated and provided with gas and metal passages b, b<2>. Alternatively the electrodes may be provided with recesses on one face and pyramidal projections on the other. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement comprising four piles having vertical electrodes. The electrolyte is introduced through the pipe F<4> passes in zig-zag fashion through the apparatus by means of holes b<8>, b<6>. The metal collecting wells D may have a common discharge pipe H or may have separate discharge connections. A number of tanks may be connected together, if desired, intercommunicating passages being provided.
