Abstract
640,593. Trimming moulded articles. DOEHLER-JARVIS CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1948, No. 4602. Convention date, March 4, 1947. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A method of treating one or more articles for the removal therefrom of flash, fin, burr and/or the like comprises immersing a plurality of solid objects; in contact with one another and including at least one article to be treated, in a vibration-transmitting body of liquid or granular material and imparting to said vibration-transmitting body vibrations at a frequency within the range of sonic and supersonic frequencies. The method is stated to be applicable to the removal of burr from moulded plastic articles. The articles 20 to be treated, Fig. 1, are placed in contact with one another in a basket 18 and immersed in water, oil or fine sand contained in a tank 12; a diaphragm 22 forming the bottom of the tank is vibrated by an electromagnet 24. Two diaphragms may be used and may both be in one wall or in the bottom; they may be synchronously operated in unison, or with a phase difference or in phase opposition, and in the latter event are preferably placed in opposite walls. A diaphragm may be suspended in the tank, or the tank may be vibrated as a whole. The vibration may be generated by using a magnetostriction rod or a piezo crystal; a moving coil may be employed. Alternatively, the vibration may be generated mechanically. When the articles 42, Fig. 4, are large, small bodies 44 may be employed as fillers. When a single body is being treated, it may be surrounded by stone chips, steel shot, &c. and the body vibrated. The process may be rendered continuous by the use of conveyers.
