Abstract
Polymeric methacrylic acid esters, e.g. methyl, butyl or isobutyl methacrylate, a plasticizer and a volatile solvent are used as temporary binders for finely divided resistive material in the preparation of electrically resistive bodies, including thermistors. The resistance material, e.g. Mn, Ni, Co or Cu oxide is made into a paste with the polymer, a plasticizer, e.g. di-methyl phthalate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycollate, di-butyl sebacate, di-butyl adipate, tri-ethylene glycol di-2-ethyl butyrate or a wax, and a volatile solvent, e.g. acetone, ethyl acetate, benzene, xylene, "Solvesso No. 2" (Registered Trade Mark), acetylene tetrachloride or a mixture of ethylene dichloride and carbon tetra-chloride, thoroughly mixed, dried and granulated. The granules are moulded, stamped or extruded into coherent disc, cylinder or sheet form, then heated to decompose and remove the binder, firstly by radiant heat then in an oven to a maximum of 600 DEG C., and finally sintered at 600-1450 DEG C. on a plate of zirconium silicate with aluminium oxide powder between the articles to prevent sticking.
