Abstract
640,057. Electric attenuators. ROSENBERG, W., and BUCKINGHAM, J. Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34563. [Class 40 (viii)] A wave-guide attenliator or load comprises a disc 1 of lossy material, such as dust iron, protruding through a slot in the broad face of a wave-guide 4. To prevent overheating of the part within the guide, the disc is rotated at about 1500 r.p.m. on the shaft 2 of an electric motor, and cooling fins 7 are provided. The slot in the wave-guide has tapered ends to prevent mismatching, and is surrounded by a plate 6 of lossy material to absorb energy which leaks out. The attenuating effect may be increased by curving the wave-guide to conform with the periphery of the disc, thus increasing the length of the disc material within the guide (Fig. 4, not shown).
