Abstract
Refractory metal silicates other than zirconium silicate, are prepared by mixing a metal oxide with an organic silicon compound which sets at room or moderately increased temperature to a hard form owing to condensation and/or polymerization, causing the compound to set, and heating, e.g. to 1300-1500 DEG C. to decompose the silicon compound and to form the silicate. The mixture may be shaped prior to the setting of the silicon compound, which may be silicones obtained from hydrolysable alkyl- and aryl-substituted silicanes and partially hydrolysed silicon esters containing a condensing agent as described in Specifications 575,752 and 612,622, [both in Group IV]. Ethyl silicate containing 2 per cent v/v piperidine is suitable. Examples describe the preparation of aluminium and magnesium silicates. A mineral form of the desired silicate or another silicate may be added to the mixture before setting. The products are useful as metal casting moulds, electrical insulating components and fire bricks. Specifications 575,734, [Group IV], and 621,737 also are referred to.
