Abstract
638,646. Goggles. WELLS, C. M., WELLS, J. C., DEWEY, B., PROCTOR, R., SCHUMACHER, E. L., SPENCER, C. E., STEWART, W. A., TONER, J. V., and WILLIAMS, E. E., (constituting the AMERICAN OPTICAL Co.). Sept. 12, 1947, No. 25089. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1941. [Class 97 (i)] In a goggle which comprises a unitary cuplike member having shield-supporting means in the forward portion thereof and continuous side walls of resilient material extending rearwardly from said means to a face-contacting portion and serving to span said means from the face of a wearer, the face-contacting portion has an inwardly curled lip of resilient material. As shown in Figs. 1 and 9, the goggle comprises a cup-like member 15 as of rubber having shields 18, 19 disposed in recesses 32, the forward part thereof and, in the rear thereof, a facecontacting portion 21 having an inwardly-curled lip 29. The goggle is held in place on the face of a wearer by a head band 24 fastened at its ends to lugs 22, 23 secured as by cementing to the side walls of the goggle. The forward part of the goggle is provided with two series of ventilating parts 20, each of which series communicates with an annular channel 36 which may be formed by a member of S-shaped crosssection inserted into a recess 41, Fig. 4, on the inside of the goggle, providing a baffle 35 and serving to support one of the shields 18 or 19. A wick of absorbent material may be placed in the channel and this wick and the baffle 35 prevent injurious gases and liquids from reaching the eyes of the wearer as air is drawn in through the ports 20. Baffles may also be formed on the outside of the goggle by providing one or more rubber caps 43, Fig. 12, with ventilating apertures 45 and a collar 46 which may be turned down over said apertures as shown at 47 in Fig. 12. On the outside of the goggle there may also be provided open-ended cylinders, each of which communicates with the goggle interior through one of the ventilating ports. Each cylinder has placed therein an acid neutralizing filter enclosed by wire mesh and consisting as of charcoal or soda-lime.
