Abstract

638,377. Spray Carburetters. CARTER CARBURETTOR CORPORATION. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21594. Convention date, May 7, 1940. [Class 7 (iii)] In a carburetter in which a choke valve 26 is under the influence of a thermosensitive device (bimetallic coil 33) located in a choke control housing 30 to the interior of which heat from the engine is transmitted the choke and a throttle valve 12 are interconnected by a cam 56 rotatable with the choke, valve, an arm 16 rotatably movable with the throttle valve, a crosshead 66 extending through, longitudinally slidable in and closely fitting an opening in the wall of the housing, a connector link 24 connecting the arm and the crosshead and means movable with the crosshead within the housing and co-operating with the cam device to limit the closing of the throttle valve when the choke valve is closed. The cam 56 is loosely mounted on the choke valve shaft 27 and acted on by a spring 61 which also acts on a member 35 which is fixed to the shaft. When the choke valve is in its closed or a partially open position the cam 56 limits the closing of the throttle valve to a fast idling position as shown in Fig. 5, a crosshead abutment 68 engaging a finger 69 on a lever 63 and an abutment 65 of the lever engaging the cam. In order to adjust the fast idling position an eccentric bush 72 is provided between the link 24 and the crosshead 66. When the throttle valve is opened a pre-determined amount the choke valve is forcibly opened against the action of the bimetallic coil an abutment 67 of the crosshead engaging the finger 69 and rotating the lever 63 into such a position that an abutment 71 on this lever engages a finger 20 on the member 35 connected to the choke valve shaft and rotates this shaft in a choke opening direction. A suction actuated piston 42 acts upon the choke valve through a link 39 and arm 37 of the member 35. Warm air from adjacent the exhaust manifold of the engine is drawn into the housing 30 by engine suction which acts through slots on the cylinder of the piston 42. The housing 30 includes a metallic portion supported by an air inlet fan 25 and a heat insulating cover 31 of phenol-resin base material. The housing 30 is divided by a partition 46 preferably having a light or silvery coloured smooth or polished surface to minimise heat, transfer. The area of a fuel jet in a passage supplying a nozzle 99 is controlled in accordance with suction and throttle valve opening. An idling system (not shown) discharges near the edge of the throttle valve.
