Abstract

638,320. Controlling consistency of paper putp; felting. MERCER, R. (Hawley Products Co.]. Oct. 21, 1947, No. 28171. [Class 96] [Also in Group XXXV] The consistency of a mixture of liquid and pulp is controlled by a pair of photo-cells which compare the light transmission of the mixture with that of the liquid from which the pulp has been extracted. A relay-operated valve controls the admission of the mixture when the consistency falls. Pulp .and liquid are mixed in the beater tank 1 and pass to a storage tank 5 from whence the mixture is admitted to the felting tank 10 by a hydraulically-operated slide valve 12, controlled by a valve 20, in turn controlled by a solenoid in the control unit 24. The pulp is deposited on a porous felting former mounted on the felting carriage 25, and the water is withdrawn by suction to a header 26 from whence it returns to the felting tank 10 through an overflow 30 and through a glass windowed absorbtion cell 33, Fig. 3 (not shown). The mixture in the tank is pump circulated through a similar cell 32. Light from a pair of lamps passes through these absorbtion cells to photo-cells connected in the control circuit 24 (see Group XXXV) which opens the valve 12 whenever the consistency falls below a preset level.
