Abstract

638,158. Shot-gun cartridges. OLIN INDUSTRIES, Inc. April 11, 1947, No. 9700. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1945. [Class 9 -(i)] A shot-gun cartridge comprises a paper tube 1 assembled to a metal base cup 2 accommodating a priming assembly 3 and a base wad 4, and contains a propellent charge 5 confined by a self-sealing gun wad 6 above which is a shot charge 9, the tube having an integral end-closure 10 formed by folding as disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 929,866. The gun wad 6 is of fibrous material and has a flange of depth <SP>1</SP>/ 10 to <SP>1</SP>/ 3 the diameter of the wad. Gun-wads for 12-gauge shot cartridges were formed with a cupping die of 0.720 inch diameter from paper discs 0.035 inch thick and diameter 0.875 to to 1.20 inch. Heavily calendered paper board impregnated with high-melting point microcrystalline waxes of petroleum origin may be used. The web of the gun wad may be spaced from the propellant to form an air space. One or more resilient wads 7 may be laid over the gun wad. The resilient wad may have one or both faces dished. Test results are given for a cartridge according to the invention and two other types of shot cartridge.
