Abstract
<PICT:0638061/III/1> A non-caking fertilizer containing ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate is made by flowing moist grains of ammonium nitrate, which may or may not be mixed with calcium carbonate, in contact with a parallel flow of air or other gases heated to 150-250 DEG C., the grains being subsequently cooled and coated with calcium carbonate by mixing, e.g. at about 25 DEG C., with a larger quantity of calcium carbonate than will adhere to the grains and removing the excess calcium carbonate. According to the drawing, molten ammonium nitrate is mixed with ground marl in vessel 1 and solidified and granulated on a cooling roller 2. The product, containing 1 to 5 per cent water, is conducted through a drying drum 3 in parallel flow with hot gases, at 200 DEG C., drawn from a furnace 8. The product, still containing 0.3 to 1.0 per cent moisture, is cooled to 40-50 DEG C. in a drum 4 by a countercurrent flow of atmospheric air and is mixed in a drum 5 with a continuous flow 12 of dried and ground marl (from 7) equal to two or three times the amount which is caused to adhere to the grains. Steam is introduced at 10, if necessary, to maintain adequate moisture content during the coating process, and the fertilizer is then sieved at 6, excess marl being returned to vessel 1.
