Abstract
637,835. Water supply. GILDER, F. N. Dec. 6, 1947, No. 32220. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a system for supplying water to the various floors of a building, there is a common supply pipe with a branch at each floor leading to a tap, and means is provided in conjunction with each branch pipe except the one most remote from the source of supply to prevent an excessive amount of water being taken at any particular outlet when a supply is also being taken at other floors. As applied to a system wherein the supply is derived from a ground service main, the junction of each branch pipe 3, Fig. 3, with the common supply pipe 2 is formed with a sloping floor and provided with a ball 7 which normally rests against an abutment 8. If the flow to the branch becomes excessive, the ball is forced up the sloping floor until it contacts a further abutment 11, in which position the flow is considerably restricted. The abutment 11 comprises two projections from a washer 10. In a modification for use where the common supply pipe 13, 13a, Fig. 6, leads from a storage tank at or above the highest floor, the junction between the supply pipe and the branch pipe 17 is so formed that the dividing point 18 is displaced towards the branch pipe. Normally, there is a static column of water in pipe 13, 13a, and a full supply may be drawn through the branch pipe. If, however, a supply is being taken at a lower floor, there will be a flow along the pipe 13, 13a, and the amount of the flow that can be drawn off along the branch pipe 17 will be restricted. Specification 650,434, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
