Abstract

637,157. Piezo-electric vibrators. STEVENS, A. H. (Submarine Signal Co.). June 8, 1945, No. 14636. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 23, 1946.] [Class 40 (iv)] A device for transmitting and receiving compressional waves comprises a number of rows of piezo-electric crystals 12, the rows having substantially continuous surfaces and being spaced a distance somewhat less than onehalf of the wavelength of the beam involved. The apparatus may be mounted in the skin 1 of a vessel to which is riveted an inertia ring 2. A plate 7 on which the rows are mounted is bolted to ring 2. The rows are spaced by synthetic resin strips 9 and electrodes 13 and 14 are provided on each side of each row. The electrodes are connected to binding posts mounted in plate 7 and leads 21 provide the external connections. The front of the rows may be provided with a rubber cover 25 and the space between the crystals and the cover may be filled with liquid to transmit the vibrations. By providing separate connections to each row of crystals they may be made to vibrate in differing phases and the direction of the resulting beam can thus be adjusted.
