Abstract
<PICT:0636324/III/1> <PICT:0636324/III/2> In distilling a mixture of liquids, e.g. in the decontamination of used oils such as lubricating, transformer or heat treatment oils, the liquid is heated and sprayed into an evacuated chamber, heat being supplied to the spray zone sufficient to compensate for the heat of vaporization and expansion. A sweeping agent, such as steam or an inert gas such as nitrogen, may be introduced into the evacuated chamber. The bottom part of the evacuated chamber may be exposed so as to be unheated. Additional surfaces on to which the spray is directed may be provided within the chamber so that evaporation takes place from the liquid films formed thereon. The evacuated chamber may be heated by internally or externally disposed heating means and, when heated by liquid or gas jacket, the liquid to be sprayed may be preheated by passage through a pipe coil disposed within the jacket. In one of the various forms of apparatus illustrated, Fig. 2, a jacket 16 containing liquid heated by a steam coil 17 surrounds an evacuated chamber 14 into which the liquid mixture, preheated by passage through coil 24, is sprayed through nozzle 25 and meets steam, sprayed in through nozzle 13, which acts as sweeping agent. Condensate is collected through pipe 21. In another form, Fig. 11, the evacuated chamber is lagged, except for the bottom, and is heated by an internal steam coil 37. The spray 34 is directed at two conical perforated surfaces 40, 41 between which are small particles such as glass beads or material such as glass wool. The purified oil, or other residual liquid, passes through a heat exchanger 44 which, in conjunction with heater 45, preheats the liquid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the degasification of beverages and the condensation of fruit juices-in which cooling before spraying may be adopted. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
