[Class 37] [Also in Group XL (c)] Apparatus for measuring small steady or slowly varying signals of the type in which the signals are " chopped " and then amplified by a thermionic amplifier having a narrow band pass for increasing the discrimination against unwanted signals, is characterized in that the amplifier comprises a number of balanced stages coupled in cascade, the first two such stages being coupled through a tuned secondary transformer, and the rate of make and break of the signal input circuit being adjusted so that the fundamental frequency of the rectangular wave impressed on the input of the amplifier is the same as the frequency to which the transformer coupling is tuned. A pushpull amplifier having a voltage stabilized power supply is described in which the input to the amplifier is provided by a strain gauge and is interrupted by a motor driven make-and-break switch, the output being rectified and measured by a meter.
