Abstract

636,072. Sliding-clasp fasteners. WADDINGTON, A. M., and WADDINGTON, J. I. Oct. 10, 1947, Nos. 27219/47 and 23596/48. [Class 44] A sliding-clasp fastener comprises a female member of channel section one end of which is bent over to form a longitudinal pocket which may be continuous or formed of a row of like female elements separated by small gaps and secured to edge of one of the sheets to be connected, and a similarly formed male member secured to the other sheet and shaped to fit into the pocket of the female member and to be retained therein to form a secure joint. The members are received in two channels 34, 35, Fig. 4, formed in a sliding clasp, the channel 35 guiding the male member being disposed to converge towards and terminate .within the guide 34 for the female member. A blade 37 is provided to lift the male elements out of the female elements in the opening movement the upstanding flanges 23, Fig. 1, of the female elements passing through a slot 40. A lug 39 is provided for connection to the pull tag. The mating edges 30, 26, Figs. 1 and 2 of the sheet material are attached to the male member 29 along a line near the edge enclosed in the pocket 24 of the female member and to the side 25 of the female member which is bent over to form the pocket. The male elements shown in Fig. 3 are provided with lips 32 for engagement behind the flanges 23 of the female elements, which flanges may be bent over to enclose the edges of the lips. Continuous male and female members 43, 42, Fig. 20, are formed of a flexible material, e.g. rubber internally reinforced with a row of like rigid elements 50, 22b, e.g. of metal, the sheet material 26a, 30a being bonded to the rubber. The inner face of the female member may be longitudinally scored to provide sharp edged lips forming a water-tight seal against the male member. The upper end of the male member is tapered in both width and thickness to facilitate the action of the lifting blade on the sliding clasp. The fastener members may be completely separable, the male member having a stop to retain the clasp and a stud and socket connection with the female member.
