Abstract

635,548. Making boots and shoes. CLARK, D. M. (Kamborian, J. S.). April 24, 1946, No. 12379. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] The toe portion 1 of the upper for a shoe or slipper of the welt type and the counter also, if desired, is' preshaped to the shape of the portion of the last upon which it is to be lasted, except over the shoe bottom area by shrinking the marginal portion 5 of the upper to impart a concave shape to it. The lower margin of the preshaped upper is then assembled with and united to the margin of a thin flexible sock lining 6 and a welt strip 12, which latter is then turned outwardly to lie in a plane parallel to the bottom of the sock lining 6, and a last is introduced into the upper to force-last it, and the shoe completed. The toe end of the upper and counter may comprise an inner thermoplastic stiffening Figs. 1b, 2b respectively. These are softened before the last is inserted, i.e. prior to lasting by admitting steam into the end of the upper from a conduit 8 through a perforated pipe P. Specification 635,386 is referred to.
