Abstract

635,375. Decorating transparent articles. HOOSIER CARDINAL CORPORATION. Aug. 1, 1947, No. 21052. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1940. [Class 93] A transparent article having a recess in its rear face is ornamented by forming on the bottom wall of the recess a design in low relief, the elevated portions of the design forming a continous surface, and bringing into contact with the surface of these elevated portions a continuous sheet of opaque colouring matter conforming to such continuous surface and supported on this surface out of contact with the depressed portions of the bottom wall of the recess, whereby coloured material will be applied only to the upper surfaces of said elevated portions. The colouring material, which may be roll-leaf, may be applied to the upper face of the elevated portions by applying heat and pressure while an opaque coating may afterwards be applied to the recess walls. In a preferred embodiment, the articles are formed of clear transparent plastic by a moulding process, the recesses in the rear walls being formed during moulding. One or more pieces of roll-leaf are laid over the raised portions in the recess and forced into contact with them by means of a heated punch. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate such a decorated article 10 comprising recesses 11 bearing coloured stripes 12 on the elevated portions 13, the stripes having been formed by applying roll-leaf 14 and pressing it with heated punch 16.
