Abstract
634,869. Friction shock-absorbers. MINER, Inc., W. H. July 31, 1947, No. 20874. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1943. [Class 108 (iii)] A friction shockabsorber mechanism comprises a pair of relatively slidable friction posts A, B, respectively disposed each at diametrically opposite sides of the mechanism, the posts having interengaging friction surfaces on their inner sides inclined to the longitudinal axis of the mechanism, and a coiled spring C extending lengthwise of the mechanism, and surrounding, exerting lateral inward pressure on, and having shouldered engagement with, the posts. In the construction shown, each spring abutment 12 is rigid with the corresponding post B which has flat friction surfaces 17, 18. The surface 17 is formed on a projection 15 at the extremity of the member which functions as a stop to limit compression movement by engagement with a central thickened portion 11 of the other abutment 12. The respective stops 15 interengage to limit expansion due to the spring C which is under pre-compression. The surfaces 17, 18 of the respective members B are in frictional engagement. Due to the inclination of these surfaces (which are all parallel with one another) the engaging surfaces are pressed increasingly into contact as compression movement increases. Each central thickened portion 11 is slightly eccentrically disposed in relation to the axis of the spring so that the end coil is in engagement with that side of the portion 11 which is opposite to the friction face 18 of the same abutment, whilst there is a clearance between the side and the coil at a diametrically opposite point. A strengthening rib 19 of the member B has a curved outer edge (viewed in cross-sectional plan), and is tapered in elevation to merge into the portion 11.
