Abstract

634,333. Wringers. LOVELL MANUFACTURING CO. July 29, 1947, No. 20487. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1946. [Class 138 (ii)] In a wringer having a head mounted for swinging movement on a wringer post and yieldably indexed in a plurality of angular positions, and having roller drive gearing biassed to neutral by spring and torque action, the gearing is movable by manual means to driving and neutral positions and is held in the driving position by latch means, the movement of the wringer from an indexed-position operating latch-releasing means to move the gearing to a neutral position independently of the manual means. The lower roller 19 is coupled through a universal joint 20 to a crown-wheel 15 which is in constant mesh with two pinions 21, 22, loosely mounted on a shaft 23. Grooves 30 in each pinion are engaged by a carrier 28 through which clutch teeth 31 on the pinions may be alternatively engaged with pins 32 on the shaft 23. The carrier 28 is biassed to a neutral position by a spring 33 and is moved to engage one or other of the clutches by a crank-pin 53 on a shaft 52 which is connected to a control handle 49 through a lost-motion connection comprising a set-screw 51 engaging a slot 50. The carrier 28 is latched in the driving position by a bell-crank 38, a projection 40 on which can engage either the upper edge 42 or a slot 43 of the carrier. A spring 44 keeps the bell-crank in engagement with a slidable latch-plate 54 and a pin 56 on the latch-plate in engagement with a cam 47 carried by the handle 49. In the neutral position of the carrier 28, the pin 56 seats in a detent 57 of the cam and, in either driving position, on shoulders 58 which permit the projection 40 to engage the carrier 28. Movement of the handle 49 from the driving to the neutral position first cams the pin on to a raised surface 59 of the cam to release the latch and then the lost-motion connection engages the shaft 52 to move the carrier 28. To stop the drive in the event of the operator's fingers being trapped, the roller frames 1, 2 are pivoted to the head 3 by bolts 7, 10, a pull or push on the rollers causing an extension 11 of the top frame 2 to engage one or other of a pair of spring-loaded bell-cranks 60, 61 either of which can unlatch the carrier 28 by moving the bell-crank 38, the driving torque and the spring 33 then operating to unlatch the drive. The wringer is indexed in any one of a plurality of angular positions by a spring-loaded index pin 72, a tapered end 71 of which engages one of a number of recesses 69. Movement of the wringer head cams the pin out of the recess and, since the head is prevented from rising by a bracket 68, the pin is raised against its spring 74 and raises a spring-loaded slidable lever 76, the upper end of which has a pin-and-slot connection with the bell-crank 38, which is thus raised to unlatch the carrier 28 and so stop the roller-drive.
