Abstract

519,648. Operating - mechanism for windows and shutters. ETABLISSEMENTS G. KLEIN & CIE. Sept. 26, 1938, No. 28051. Convention date, Sept. 25. 1937. [Class 20 (iii)] The operating-mechanism of a sliding sash or shutter comprises at least two control members which are so arranged that either of the said members can by itself alone and through mechanical connections only, effect the movements of the sash or shutter in both directions, and means are included in the gearing connecting the control members with the sash or shutter by which one control member remains immovable when the other control member is being operated to raise or lower the sash or shutter. The sash 2 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 slides in guides 4 and is operated by driving mechanism or rack-andpinion' type 7, 8 provided at each side of'the window. Each pinion 8 is provided with an integral socket 11 which is engaged by the spindle 12 of an operating handle or wheel 9 with an interposed expanding spring 10 carried on a sleeve 13a on the spindle 12; the handle 9 cannot be operated by the pinion 8, but, when the handle 9 is rotated, a catch 13 on the spindle 12 causes the spring 10 to expand and grip the socket 11, thereby driving the pinion. Alternatively, the mechanism may be such that actuation of the crank causes a peg moving with the crank to effect temporary coupling with the member to be driven, such as the socket 11. The sash may be locked in any position by mechanism operated by a separate handle 15. Alternatively. the locking mechanism may be adapted to be released automatically whenever either of the cranks is operated ; for example, the relative displacement, when the crank is operated, of two members mounted coaxially with the spindle 12 may be used to cause the projection of a peg controlling from a distance the locking mechanism. In the mechanism shown in Fig. 4 there is provided a single rack-andpinion device 7, 8 which may be operated from either of two control handles 9 through a differential gear system 23, and pinions 24, 25. The handles 9 are at opposite sides of the window and are each connected with the shafts 22', 22<2> of the differential gear by worm-andworm-wheel gearing 20, 21, which, although it allows the transmission of the drive by the worms from the cranks. does not allow the transmission of a reverse drive from the differential gearing by the worm-wheels to the worms and cranks. The shaft 22<1> may be in two parts which are normally connected together by a clutch, but when disconnected by operating the spring-controlled push-rod 30 enable the sash to be operated by hand. The rack and pinion 7, 8 of Fig. 4, may be replaced by a chain drive as shown in Fig. 7 ; the chain 32 which is driven by a pinion 33 and slides in casings 34, 35 is provided with a cross-bar 36 which is attached to a plate 37 fixed to the sash. The window may be provided with a balancing system including a roller which is carried by an arm and bears on the lower cross-bar of the sash.
