The operation of this device is as follows:

If crank I1 is now turned to open the window, the initial turning movement of the crank I! will cause the worm l3 to be cammed outwardly by the worm gear 9 until the worm l3 abuts the plate 1 as at 52, thus permitting the coil spring 3| to retract the bolt 26 from the opening 29 and acting through the bell crank 23 and link 22 swing the lever I9 clockwise so that the end 20 is held against the shoulder of the worm l3. After the worm reaches normal position abutting against the plate 1 as at 52, shown in Fig. 4, further turning of the worm will rotate the worm gear to swing open the window panel 3.
A modified form of this combined window operator and lock is shown in Figs. 5 through 9. In this form of the invention the worm gear 9 is driven by the worm 4J which is splined upon the shaft 4!. The shaft 4| is journalled in the casing 8 in the same fashion as the shaft l4 and also turned by the usual crank handle H. A lever 42 is pivotally mounted upon the base of the casing 6. One end of the lever is pivotally connected to the link 22 as at 43 and the other end of the lever has a swivel connection as at 44 with a plate 45. The plate 45 has an opening 46 through which the reduced end 41 of the shaft 4| is threaded so that the plate 45 can shift lengthwise along the reduced end 41 of the shaft 4|. A coil spring 48 is threaded over the shaft 4| and mounted between the plate 45 and the wall of the casing 6 so that the coil spring normally urges and holds the plate 45 and worm 40 in the position shown in Figs. 7 and 9.
In this form of the invention the spring 48 exerts suflicient tension so that during the normal closing and opening of the swinging window 3 the driving torque will be transmitted from the worm to the worm gear to open and close the window. As soon as the swinging window panel reaches closed position the worm gear 9 cannot turn further. Further turning of the worm 40 causes the worm gear to act as a cam and cams the worm 40 axially along the shaft 4| from the position shown in Fig. 9 to that shown in Fig. 8, thereby compressing the spring 48 and at the same time shifting the plate member 45 along the reduced portion 41 of the shaft from the position shown in Fig. 9 to that shown in Fig. 8. This movement of the plate 45 causes the lever 42 to swing counter-clockwise and thereby through the link 22 and bell crank lever 23, project the bolt 26 into the keeper opening 29 in the window frame to lock the swinging window in closed position. When the crank handle I1 is turned to open the window the initial turning movement of the crank handle will now cause the worm gear 9 to cam the worm 40 outwardly, thus permitting the coil spring 48 to expand and force the plate outwardly or toward the right from the position shown in Fig. 8 to that shown in Fig. 9 so that the plate 45 follows the worm '40. This outward movementof the plate 45 is transmitted through the lever 42, link 22, lever 23, to the bolt 26'which is retracted from the keeper opening 29 to the full line position shown in Fig. 6. As soon as the worm 40 reaches the end of its outward travel, it abuts against the plate I as at 50. Further turning of the worm 49 will turn the worm gear 9 and open the swinging window.
A second modified form of the invention is shown in Figs. 10, 11 and 12. In this form the window glass frame 5 is bolted by the same type of link 22, bell crank 23 and bolt 26 as shown in the principal above described form of the invention. In this second modified form of the invention the worm 60 is fixed upon, or integrally formed with, the shaft 6| which is turned by the usual crank handle H. The shaft 6| is journalled in the casing 6 as at 62 and 63. The sup port shaft 4 for the swinging window glass 3 has fixed on its lower end the worm gear 64 provided with the usual gearfteeth 65. The lower end of the shaft 4 and worm gear 84 are provided with a bore 66 in which is journalled the shaft 61. The worm gear is also provided with an arcuate opening 68 extending outwardly from the bore 66 to the outer surface of the gear.
A swinging gear tooth 59 is keyed to the shaft 6'! by the key 10 and swingably mounted in the opening 68. This swinging gear tooth 69 retains the shaft 61 in the bore 66. A crank arm H, provided with a square opening, is secured on the square end 12 of the shaft 61 to swing with the shaft and acts through link 22 and bell crank 23 to project and retract the bolt 26.
In the operation of this modified form the position of the worm gear 64 when the window is fully open is shown in Fig. 11. If the crank handle is now turned to close the window, the worm gear 64 will turn in a counter-clockwise direction and the swinging window will reach closed position when the worm gear 64 reaches the position shown in Fig. 10. At this time it will be noted that the swinging gear tooth 69 has just reached the position where it meshes with the worm BI! and. the gear teeth 65 of the worm gear 64 have just passed out of mesh with the worm 60. Therefore further turning of the worm 60 in the same direction will cause the gear tooth 69 to travel along the worm in a counter-clockwise direction from the full line position shown in Fig. 10 to the dotted line position, thus swinging the shaft 61 and arm ll counter-clockwise from the full line position to the dotted line position. As the arm H swings from the full to the dotted line position, the link 22 is moved to the right as viewed in Fig. 3, thus throwing the bolt 23 into the keeper opening 29 to lock the swinging window. If the crank handle is now turned in the opposite direction to open the swinging window, the initial turning movement of the worm 60 will cam the gear tooth 69 from the dotted line position, Fig. 10, to the full line position Cal thereby through the shaft 81, arm II and link 22 retracting the bolt 26 from the keeper opening 29 in the framei. As soon as the gear tooth 69 in its clockwise rotation reaches the full line position, Fig. 10, it abuts the side wall 15 of the opening 88, thus transmitting the driving torque to the driven worm gear and swinging the worm gear 64 in a clockwise direction so that the worm gear teeth at the opposite end of the opening 68 are meshed with the worm 60 whereupon further turning of the worm' 80 will rotate the worm gear and swing the window to open position.
I claim:
1.- In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a .window panel arranged to be moved to closed'pcsition, in combination an operator. for moving the window to closed position, a lock for locking the window panel in closed position, the said window panel operator comprising rotatable driving worm and driven worm gear members, operative connections between the rotatable driven worm gear member and the window panel whereby the driven member is stationary when the window panel reaches closed position, a shiftable member operative only when the window panel is closed and the driven worm gear member stationary, operative connections between the shiftable member and the lock, the said shiftable member being operatively connected with the rotatable driving worm member whereby only after the window panel reaches closed position and the driven worm gear member is stationary further rotation of the driving worm member shifts the shiftable member and operative connections to throw the look into interengagement with the closed window panel.
2. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a window panel having a frame arranged to be moved to closed position, in combination an operator for moving the window to closed position, an opening in'the frame serving as a keeper, a bolt for ,interengaging the keeper when the window panel is closed, the said operator comprising rotatable driving worm and driven worm gear members, operative connections' between the rotatable driven worm gear member and the window panel whereby the driven member is stationary when the window panel reaches closed position, a shiftable member operative only when the window panel is closed and the driven worm gear member stationary, operative connections between the shiftable member and the bolt, the said shiftable member being operatively connected with the rotatable driving worm member whereby only after the window panel reaches closed position and the driven worm gear member is stationary further rotation of the driving worm member shifts the shiftable memher and operative connections to throw the bolt into interengagement with the keeper carried by the window panel. I
3. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a window panel arranged to be moved to open and closed positions, the combination of a window operator including rotatable driving and driven members in dental enga'gement, a lock for interengaging the window panel when closed, one of the said driving and driven members being arranged to shift only upon further actuation of the operator after the window panel is closed, and operative connections between the shiftable member and the lock operated by the shifting of the shiftable member to throw the lock into interengagement with the window panel to lock the same. 1
4. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a window panel arranged to be moved to open and closed positions, the combi-. nation of a window operator for the said window panel including rotatable driving and driven members, a lock for interengaging the window panel when .closed, operative connections between the driven member and the'window panel whereby the driven member is stationary when the window panel reaches closed position; the said driving member being axially shiftable alongits axis of rotation when the driven member is stationary, and operative connections between,
to, the swinging window, a support for the driving worm, the said driving worm being axially shiftable along its support, operative connections between the lock and the shiftable worm operated by the shifting of the worm when the window panel is closed to throw the lock into looking interengagement with the closed window panel.
6. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a swinging window panel arranged to be moved to open and cl sed positions, the combination of a window 0 rator including a worm and a wormgear, operative connections between the worm. gear and the swinging window whereby the .worm gear is stationary when the swinging window is in closed position, a support for the said worm, the said worm being axially shiftableon the said support, resilient means for holding the worm against shifting and in driving relation with the said worm gear during the closing of the window and yieldingto permit axial shifting of the worm along its supportupon further turning of the worm when the window panel is closed, operative connections between the worm and the lock actuatedin the shifting of the worm for throwing the look into interengagement with the window panel when closed.
7. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a swinging window panel arranged to be moved to open and closed positions, the combination of a window operator including a worm. and a worm gear, operative connections between the worm gear and the swinging window whereby the worm gear is stationary when the swinging window is in closed position, a rotatable shaft, the worm being splined on the said shaft, resilient means for holding the worm against shifting and in driving relation with the said worm gear during the closing of the window and yielding to permit axial shifting of the worm along the shaft uponfurther turning of the worm when the window panel is closed, operative connections between the worm and the lock actuated in the shifting of the worm for throwing the look into interengagement with the window panel when closed.
- 8. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a window panel arranged tobemoved ,to closed position, in combination an operator for moving the window to closed position, a lock for locking the window, panel in closed position,
the said window panel operator comprising an axially shiftable rotatable driving member and a rotatable driven member, operative connections between the rotatable driven member and the window panel whereby the driven member is stationary when the window panel reaches closed position, operative connections between the shiftable rotatable driving member and the lock, the said driving member driving the driven member during the closing of the window panel but when the driving load reaches a. predetermined point, as when the panel is closed, the said driven member remains stationary and the torque reaction shifts the driving member axially and transmits the driving force through said connections to throw said lock into locking engagement with said window panel.
9. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a swinging window panel arranged to be moved to open and closed positions, the combination of a window operator including a worm and a worm gear, a shaft for interconnecting the worm gear and the swinging window, a lock bolt projectable into interengaging relation with the window panel when closed to lock the same, a shiftable member carried by the worm gear, operative connections between the said shiftable member and the latch bolt whereby when the window reaches closed position the worm is disengaged from the worm gear and meshes with the shiftable member to shift the same and throw the latch bolt into interengagement with the closed window panel.
10. In a window assembly comprising a window opening and a swinging window panel arranged to be moved to open and closed positions, the combination of a window operator including a worm and a worm gear, a shaft for interconnecting the worm gear and the swinging window, a lock bolt projectable into interengaging relation with the window panel when closed to lock the same, a shiftable member carried by the worm gear, operative connections between the said shiftable member and the latch bolt whereby when the window reaches closed position the worm is disengaged from the worm gear and meshes with the shiftable member' to shift the same and throw the latch bolt into interengagement with the closed window panel, and when the worm is turned to open the window the driving torque is transmitted through the shiftable connection to the worm gear to rotate the same into meshing driving relation with the worm 1 to swing the window open.
