[Class 100 (iv)] A portable typewriter is constructed of a slotted transverse keyboard carrier 6, a rear base-plate 1 carrying a type-bar segment 2, a pair. of side walls 3 forming the cover portions of the typewriter, and two horizontal upper plates 5 which support the ink ribbon mechanism. Only four patterns of key levers 7 are necessary, and these are all mounted on a common pivot 8 mounted in the recesses 6<SP>1</SP> of the carrier 6. The type-bars 11 are pivoted to the segment 2, and are connected by links 12 to spring-returned levers 9 which are actuated by cam surfaces 9<SP>1</SP> engaged by cam surfaces 7<SP>1</SP> of the key levers 7, and the arrangement is such that a uniform depression of the keys produces an accelerating movement of the type levers. The segment 2 is fitted with a damping device comprising a dovetail metal segment 15 mounted on an elastic ring 16 fitted in a flat groove 17, and projections on the type-bars engage the segment 17. The bars 11 also have projections 11<SP>1</SP> which depress in a guide 19 a universal bar 18 stamped from a single sheet of metal, and formed with a projection 181 which operates by a ratchet and a pair of pawls a wheel which advances a rack attached to the carriage of the platen so as to space the impressions. The platen is mounted on a base 41 carried by a lever 27, and operation of a shiftkey actuates a lever 26 which normally holds the lever 27 depressed. A spring 30 raises the lever 27 and the roller 14 is moved to a position in which it is engaged by the type of a capital letter. The rising movement of the lever 27 is controlled by a screw 40 engaging a projection 34, and the lever 27 is held in raised position by a catch-lever 26 which is released on return of the lever 32.
