Abstract
634,195. Mechanical stokers. STEIN ET ROUBAIX SOC. ANON. March 21, 1947, No, 7865. Convention date, July 16, 1943. [Class 78 (i)] A device for feeding fuel to a furnace which is elevated at a level above the normal furnace flooring, comprises a fuel-feeding hopper having a discharge screw and a succession of conduits each with an associated rotatable conveyer screw therein, the first of the conduits being horizontal or substantially horizontal and adapted to receive fuel from the hopper and the remaining conduits being inclined to the horizontal and rising successively at an increasing angle from the horizontal conduit up to an elevated delivery conduit from which fuel is delivered to a furnace, the conduits being inter-connected by ball joints and the conveying screws being interconnected by universal joints. As shown, Fig. 1, a feeding hopper 10 is situated below a fuel bunker 11 and is discharged by a conveyer screw 12 controlled by a reducing gear 13. Telescopic conduits 15, 16 have an internal screw 17 coupled to the screw 12 by a universal joint 18. Universal joints 21, 24 connect screws 17, 20 and 23, the screws 20. 23 being in conduits 19, 22 respectively. The conduits are connected by joints 25, 26 and 27 so that the fuel is fed up through the conduits. At the upper part of the delivery conduit 22 the coal empties on to a ribbed plate 28 and is distributed on the grate by a fluid under pressure passing out through suitable openings in a nozzle chamber 29. A moistening device 33 is provided for the coal prior to its entry into the furnace to cause an agglomeration of dust about the larger pieces. A plurality of these mechanical stokers may be used to feed a furnace through a plurality of openings or a plurality of furnaces situated at desired levels. As shown in Fig. 5, an operating motor 37 for stokers 38, 39 and 40 actuates the reducing gear 42 for the stoker 38 through a clutch 41. The reducing gears 42, 43 and 44 for the stokers 38, 39 and 40 are interconnected by transmission shafts 46 and universal joints 47 in such a way that the reducing gears are actuated simultaneously by the motor 37. A coupling and releasing device is provided on each of the gears 42, 43 and 44 so that any stoker may be stopped whilst leaving the others in operation.
