Abstract

633,983. Utilizing wave-energy. FAULDS, G. E. Nov. 18, 1947, No. 30621. [Class 69 (i)] A structure for utilizing wave-energy to raise a liquid comprises one or more air-compression chambers 1 closed to atmosphere but open to an expanse of water below the wave-trough level, and in communication via a pipe-line or lines 13 with one or more pairs of tanks, each pair comprising a suction tank 2 connected via a passage 17 and valve 18 with a lift tank 4. The suction tank 2 is in communication with a source 6 of liquid to be raised, whilst the lift tank 4 is open to atmosphere at the top. Rarefaction of the air in chamber 1 due to a wave trough 10 sets up suction in the pipe 13 and tank 2 so raising liquid from the well or source 6 via a valve 12 into the tank 2; compression of air set up by a wavecrest 9 forces air through the pipe 13 to force liquid from the tank 2 into the lifttank 4 via, a valve 18. Any subsequent suction tank 3 is in communication with a preceding lift tank through an intake 11. A battery of chambers 1 may be used, or a series of batteries at different levels to cope with variations in tide level. Where more than one pair of tanks 2, 4 is employed these are at successively higher levels and each suction tank preferably has an air pipe-line connection to a separate chamber 1, the number of chambers being equal to the number of pairs of tanks, whilst with a series of batteries an air pipe-line is provided between each suction tank and a chamber in each battery.
